MUHLENBERG CO, KY (WFIE) - A coal mine in Muhlenberg County is laying off Tri-Staters, but some of the layoffs are just temporary.
About 75 workers at the Ken-American Resources owned Paradise Mine were notified Tuesday that they would no longer have a job Tuesday.
The work force at the Paradise Mine, located near Central City, decreased, from 378 workers to 303.
It was a move that company spokesperson Chris Van Bever said "was a necessary step to ensure the future of the mine."
Van Bever said the layoffs are a result of a production shift and reconstruction projects going on at the mine.
In a press release from the company, Ken American President Mark Nelson said "the layoffs were unavoidable as we accomplish significant changes in the Paradise Mine."
Company officials said they don't anticipate any more layoffs.
Reconstruction projects to the mine should be completed in six months, authorities said, and at that time, some of the workers that were laid off could be rehired.
