UNION COUNTY, KY (WFIE) - An investigation is underway by Kentucky State Police into a death at the Union County Jail.

Authorities said 39-year-old Trisha L.  Powell, of Sturgis, was found unresponsive in her cell Friday during a routine check by a deputy jailer.

Deputies and EMS attempted to resuscitate Powell but were not successful.

Union County Coroner Stephen Shouse was notified and pronounced Powell dead.

Investigators said the cause could be a possible suicide by hanging.

An autopsy will be conducted at the Kentucky State Medical Examiners Office in Madisonville.

The case is still under investigation by Kentucky State Police detectives.

KSP was assisted at the scene by the Morganfield Police Department, The Union County Coroners Office, and the Union County Jailer.
