MCLEAN COUNTY, KY (WFIE) Work is nearly completed on a new animal shelter in McLean County, Kentucky.

The former shelter burned to the ground in November, killing 19 dogs and cats and displacing the rest to a shelter in Daviess County.

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the sounds of hammers and saws means a new beginning for McLean County's animal shelter.

"I come down just to look, just to see what progress they've made each day says Whitney Swann, the shelter's director. Kind of puts me in a better mood."

She hopes with a new beginning, more dogs and cats can be given a new beginning as well.

"Yeah I think we'll get a lot more donations and adoptions she says. It'll be a lot more open to the public now and it's going to be open a few extra hours than what it used to be."

The shelter is being built on the same spot as the old one was before it burned down, but Swann says this one will have a lot more safety features so history doesn't repeat itself.

"It's going to have a sprinkler system and be up to code on everything. The electrical is be totally redone," says Swann.

She says the outpouring of donations has been a big help getting the new shelter started.

However even when the doors open, she hopes the donations will keep coming in.

"We can never have too much of anything," Swann says.  "I've had people dropping off boxes of cleaning supplies, dog food, dog toys, anything."

The new shelter is expected to open in the next couple weeks.
