VINCENNES, IN (WFIE) - An overnight explosion and fire shook the town of Vincennes on Thursday.

Firefighters, responding to reports of a leaking propane tank, heard a loud hissing sound as they approached this barn, of propane retailer new gas.

Just a short time later, the propane tank exploded.

Neighbors had to evacuate the areal, and Highway 41 was shut down.

Firefighters tell us the shock wave from the explosion was so powerful that it caused minor damage to surrounding properties.

"We had a large mushroom flame into the air, couple hundred feet into the air," Vincennes Fire Chief Tim Smith said. "We have debris that was scattered 6 to 8 hundred feet, so it was quite intense."

No word on what caused that leak.
