Another Piranha Caught In Boonville Lake

New Media Producer: Kerry Corum

UPDATE, FRI, 7:30 AM: Shaun Seibert, 12, caught an 11-inch red bellied piranha at the Boonville City Lake.

Obviously, piranha are not native to Boonville, they're usually found in the Amazon, so you can imagine Shaun's surprise.

But this isn't the first time a piranha's been pulled from the Boonville City Lake.

Someone caught another one over the weekend, leading the park manager to believe someone illegally dumped their home aquarium into the lake.

UPDATE, THU, 2:30 PM: The Boonville park manager says another piranha was caught this weekend, in the same city lake.

DNR officials believe the fish came from a personal aquarium that was illegally released into public waterways.

Previously: While fishing with his father on May 22, 12-year-old Shaun Seibert felt a tug on his line. When he reeled the fish in from the water, everyone was shocked!

Seibert had caught a Red-Bellied Piranha - a fish found in the Amazon, not the Boonville City Lake!

It's suspected the fish was set free from a personal aquarium, which is illegal. A fish such as this one can impose a long-term risk to public waterways.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says this occurs only once or twice a year. And since piranhas cannot survive in low temperatures, it's suspected the fish was recently released.

After the DNR froze the fish, it was returned to Seibert and his father. They now plan to mount this soon-to-be 7th grader's prize!
