Indiana's setting up an automated system to track inmates in jails and prisons.
It will automatically call or e-mail people who want to be notified about an offender's status, like if the inmate's released, or changes facilities, or has an upcoming parole hearing. Governor Daniels says other states have similar systems.
Under the current victim notification system, people can call local officials to track an offender, but there's no single place to go for the information. The service, which should be up and running in April, will be offered in both English and Spanish.
The crime victims can remain anonymous.
