Former police officer sentenced

Gerald Rainey, a highly decorated former Evansville Police Officer was sentenced to 18 months probation and 80 hours of community service after pleading guilty to theft, which is a Class D felony. 

Rainey was charged in April of this year after admitting he took money from Montrell Field's backpack which was confiscated during the arrest of Fields on an outstanding drug warrant.

Rainey left the courtroom relieved that he isn't going to jail, but the prosecution felt he should be.    

Gerald Rainey, former police officer sentenced, says, "I would just to thank all of the support I've had through this whole ordeal, is what I would like to say. I had a lot of support from family and friends that means a lot."

Stan Levco, the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor, says, "Arguably he could have bee sentenced to jail because, I do think it's way more serious for a police officer to commit than for an ordinary citizen."    

With Rainey's felony conviction he can never work as a police officer again.
