VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) - A vacant home erupted in flames Saturday morning.

It was set on purpose by firefighters for training.

Scott Township Fire Department set fire to the home near Highway 41 and Inglefield Road to show what types of fires crews can go in and take care of from the inside, and when they have to fight the flames from the outside.

The fire started in the stairwell, but the wind blew it through the upper floor.

"It may be four or five years before you get a house that is vacant, not remodelable, somebody wants to donate to the department to allow you to train on it," Scott Township Fire Chief Keith Kahre said. "You can burn in trailers, you can burn in simulators, but it doesn't really teach the new firefighter what a fire's gonna do in a building without coming and doing this."

Fire officials said a lot of these fires happen at night.

This day burn allowed crews to see the fire go through it's different stages.
