GIBSON CO., IN (NBC) - Indiana's coal-burning power plants are taking heat from a Washington, D.C. environmental group being blamed for contributing to global warming, but is that fair?

Indiana ranks fourth behind Texas, Ohio and Florida as emitting the most carbon dioxide.

According to most recent data by the EPA, a study also found Duke Energy's Gibson power station just outside Mt. Carmel one of the most dirty in the country.

The study found most power plants built before 1980 to be big emitters of pollution.

Duke Energy said this study is misleading.

A spokesperson for Duke said the Gibson station is one of the largest in the country and would likely rank high on such a list, however, Duke Energy said:

"Indiana power customers invested over $1 billion to reduce sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions at this Gibson station."

Environment America wants Indiana senators to support a climate bill calling for greenhouse gases to be cut 20 percent by the year 2020.

Senator Bayh said this is unlikely without the participation of India and China
