POSEY COUNTY, IN (WFIE) - A Tri-State murder suspect who was found in Mexico is being brought back to the Tri State.

Lee Kershaw is scheduled to be in Posey County Court at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

Police say he was on the run for a week, but authorities caught up with him Saturday night.

A few days after he went missing, police say Kershaw abandoned his car in Missouri, but  managed to hide from police, until now.

The odds of capturing him weren't promising, but on the one week anniversary of the shooting at 420 Coronado Drive, 14 News learned Kershaw was in custody.

"He was originally apprehended in the Acapulco area by Mexican authorities in cooperation with the United States Marshals Service," Mt. Vernon Police Chief Grant Beloat said.

Beloat said he was notified just before 9:00 p.m. Sunday.

U.S. Marshals also told him Kershaw was returned to the U.S. and currently at the Maricopa County Jail, awaiting extradition.

"The extradition and transportation arrangements are pending to return Mr. Kershaw to Posey County," Beloat said.

Mt. Vernon Police said when Kershaw returns to Posey County, he faces murder charges.

14 News contacted the victim's mother, Clara David, to discuss the capture.

She would not talk on camera, but said the family is relieved Kershaw was caught and no one else was killed.

14 News did talk to Kershaw's grandfather, Ed Kershaw.

He said his grandson has psychological problems and maybe behind bars he'll get the treatment he needs to get well.

"I've been worried about that happening for two or three years, but no one would listen to me," Ed said.

There are so many questions that still need to be answered. Why was Kershaw heading to Mexico and did he have a weapon at the time of the arrest?

Mt. Vernon Police said they should have these answers and more once he arrives in Posey County.
