Eye exams could hold key to diabetes detection

(NBC) - Looking into a person's eyes can alert a physician to health problems, including diabetes.

Doctors say blood vessel damage, known as "diabetic retinopathy" has been found in people that had not yet known they were diabetic.

If the damage is caught early enough, a laser can be used to decrease fluid leakage, but it does not cure the condition.

Doctors say early intervention is key to those most at risk for diabetes related vision loss.

"Even with all our technologies and abilities to treat it, more people go blind from diabetes than any other condition," said Dr. Alan Lacoste an ophthalmologist.

Doctors say those past the age of 45, should have an eye exam once a year, and earlier if you have a family history of the disease.
