HANCOCK CO., KY (WFIE) - A company that closed its doors nearly 2 years ago is now reopening in Hancock Co., putting dozens of workers back on the payroll.
Roll Coater Incorporated says it plans to restart its facility here in Hawesville.
About 100 workers were laid off a year and a half ago when the plant went idle."
The President and CEO of Roll Coater, Robert O'Neal, issued the following statement: "Our loyal customers have rewarded us with increased demand for our services, and the immediate restart of our Hawesville facility offers our customers additional flexibility to continue to grow."
Economic leaders in Hancock County say Roll Coater will make a big impact on the local economy.
"That's still a significant business in Hancock County and a significant part of our employment," says Mike Baker, Industrial Foundation.
The Industrial Foundation says that over two thirds of the jobs in Hancock County are in manufacturing, and recent callbacks at major employers like Aleris and Century are turning the local economy around.
"All of our major plants seem to, if not totally flushed, have recalled most of the employees that were laid off, and there's even some hiring going on," said Baker.
Hancock County's unemployment peaked last year at over 15%.
Economic leaders say it's down to about 9% now and could be even lower when employees get back to work at Roll Coater.
"Hopefully our economy and our recovery will continue," says Baker. "I know it's been shaky lately and we've seen some concern about a double dip, but, hopefully, we're not seeing that, and so far we're not seeing that in Hancock County."
The statement by Roll Coater did not specify how many employees would be coming back to work or how soon they might be called back onto the job.
